Research
ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory.
3 Pillars of ELLIS Research
ELLIS offers a PhD and Postdoc program connecting top young researchers globally to leading European AI scientists. The program provides diverse training and tracks (academic, industry, multidisciplinary).
ELLIS is building a network of world-class AI research sites across Europe, each serving as the heart of a local AI ecosystem. Sites can be composed of the local AI research institutions and universities.
ELLIS' 16 research programs focus on advancing AI through theoretical foundations, algorithms, and applications (e.g., health, climate) and more. They are led by ELLIS Fellows and Scholars, outstanding researchers in their fields.

Projects Building on ELLIS
These nationally and EU-funded projects build on and extend the ELLIS network. These projects connect researchers, offer training and mobility programs, and contribute to policy work.

Mobility Programs & Funds
Exchanging ideas face-to-face, getting to know new research environments and initiating collaborations are crucial for scientific excellence and innovative research in the cutting-edge field of modern AI.To foster exchange among scientists in Europe, several projects building on ELLIS support junior and senior researchers with dedicated mobility programs.
ELLIS PhD Award

ELLIS has established the ELLIS PhD Award to recognize and encourage outstanding research achievements during the dissertation phase in artificial intelligence and machine learning related fields (including computer vision and robotics). The ELLIS PhD Award is sponsored by the Kühborth Stiftung GmbH. Each awardee will receive Euro 2,500 prize money. Typically, there will be two awards per calendar year, one given to a female researcher and one to a male researcher.
