ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory. Currently, ELLIS counts 1,000 AI researchers as members (status March 2023).

How to join the ELLIS Society?

Membership in the ELLIS Society is open to scientists that:

  • have a PhD or equivalent degree;
  • regularly publish at top tier venues in machine learning-driven fields. Examples include NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, JMLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, IJCV, PAMI, RSS, CoRL, TRO, IJRR, Science Robotics, ACL, EMNLP, KDD, AAAI, IJCAI, COLT, UAI, AAMAS, AISTATS, TACL, SIGIR, WSDM, Web Conference. Please include a link to a Google Scholar profile;
  • work in Europe, are European (working elsewhere) or have some other relation to Europe.

A nomination message explaining how the candidate scientist meets the above criteria should be sent to membership@ellis.eu. Both self-nominations and nominations by existing members are welcome. In either case, the application needs to be endorsed by two existing members of the ELLIS society who (a) work in a different country than the candidate and (b) do not have the same nationality as the candidate.

The endorsements should be solicited beforehand and the names of the endorsing members should be included in the application email. The endorser should send a brief email supporting the application to membership@ellis.eu. By endorsing an application the endorser vouches that the candidate is a strong scientist and their work is relevant to ELLIS.

For applications where the candidate is not regularly publishing in the top-tier venues in machine learning-driven fields listed above (e.g. because they work in a different field of research), at least one of the endorsers needs to be an ELLIS Fellow. By endorsing the candidate the Fellow vouches that the candidate publishes in top-tier venues of the candidate’s field of research and their work is relevant to ELLIS. Each application with two endorsements is vetted by the ELLIS membership committee. Endorsers who are not sure whether a particular candidate who asked them for an endorsement meets the criteria can discuss the case with the ELLIS membership committee by sending an email to membership@ellis.eu.
