About ELLIS
Strengthening Europe's Leadership in AI through Research Excellence
ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory.
Founded in 2018, ELLIS has quickly grown into a network that counts 2 Institutes, 41 ELLIS Units, 1 Associate Unit at world-class institutions in 17 countries, 16 ELLIS research programs and a pan-European PhD & Postdoc program. The members of ELLIS are committed to shaping the future of AI in Europe by pushing the scientific and technological boundaries for human-centered, beneficial and safe AI.
Creation & Mission
AI is revolutionizing our world, but Europe faces significant challenges in this domain. Compared to North America and China, European AI research suffers from underinvestment, brain drain to more lucrative opportunities abroad, and a fragmented academic landscape. The distinction between academia and industry is blurring, with companies leading cutting-edge research while universities struggle to compete for talent and resources.
ELLIS, a grassroots initiative by European researchers, seeks to address these issues by fostering a vibrant and competitive AI research ecosystem in Europe, ensuring the continent remains at the forefront of this transformative technology.
The mission of ELLIS is to benefit Europe in two ways:
We want the best basic research to be performed in Europe, to enable Europe to shape how machine learning and modern AI change the world.
We want to have economic impact and create jobs in Europe, and believe this is achieved by outstanding and free basic research.

How We Collaborate
The ELLIS PhD and Postdoc Program offers outstanding young researchers from all over the world a unique entry point to cutting-edge machine learning research in Europe.
ELLIS is creating a network of research sites distributed across Europe with new working environments that enable outstanding scientists to combine cutting-edge research with the creation of start-ups and industrial impact.
ELLIS has established 16 pan-European research programs, each focusing on areas with the potential to move the needle in modern AI—from basic research in theory and algorithms to human-centric and trustworthy AI, and applications in health and climate sciences.
