ELSA Expands: Fifteen New Research Institutions and Universities Join the Network

In June of this year, the European Lighthouse on Secure and Safe AI (ELSA) began a significant expansion, welcoming fifteen new members - universities and research institutions that are all part of established ELLIS Units. This marks a significant step in strengthening ELSA’s network and in advancing cutting-edge research on secure and trustworthy artificial intelligence across Europe.
After receiving an extension earlier this year, ELSA continues to build on its success as a European Network of Excellence. The initiative brings together leading experts from across the continent to drive research in Secure and Safe AI, Technical Robustness and Safety, Privacy-Preserving Techniques and Infrastructure, and Human Agency and Oversight.
The founding members of ELSA come from eight European countries - Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. With the addition of these fifteen new ELLIS-affiliated institutions, ELSA further broadens its geographical reach and deepens its commitment to fostering trustworthy, secure, and human-centered AI.
The new ELSA members are:
- Czech Technical University in Prague (ELLIS Unit Prague)
- Fundación de la Comunitat Valenciana Unidad ELLIS Alicante (ELLIS Unit Alicante)
- ELLIS Unit Delft
- Friedrich Schiller University Jena (ELLIS Unit Jena)
- Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (ELLIS Unit Jena)
- Graz University of Technology (ELLIS Unit Graz)
- IDEAS Research Institute (ELLIS Unit Warsaw)
- Institute for Machine Learning, Johannes Kepler University (ELLIS Unit Linz)
- Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ELLIS Unit Vienna)
