Unit Sweden
Unit Mission
The ELLIS Unit Sweden will focus on high-impact research areas that combine strong theoretical foundations with real-world applicability, and will promote the development of responsible AI—ensuring that artificial intelligence advances in alignment with societal goals and human values. The ELLIS Unit Sweden will complement and strengthen the existing ELLIS network, particularly within the Nordic region, through privileged and strategic collaborations with the ELLIS Institute Finland and the ELLIS Unit Copenhagen, building on the connections already established through the recently launched Nordic AIR initiative.

Research Agenda
The unit’s research activities will be structured around three closely interconnected themes:
Foundations of AI: Efforts will focus on strengthening the theoretical and computational foundations of AI to ensure that future systems are provably robust and transparent. This area encompasses the development of theoretical models for efficient learning and optimization, as well as the exploration of critical aspects such as ethics, fairness, and accountability.
AI for Scientific Discovery: Here AI will be used to accelerate advanced data analysis and complex simulations through physics- and mathematics-aware generative models. These tools will drive breakthroughs in medicine, life sciences, physics, and materials science, thereby empowering scientific discovery.
AI for Engineering and Society: Research in this area will focus on applying AI to engineering, industrial design, and societal applications, thereby enhancing key systems and infrastructures essential to modern life, including robotics, communication networks, transportation systems, and power grids.
