Sweden gains a new AI unit in leading European network

To strengthen Sweden’s position in artificial intelligence, a Swedish Unit is now being launched within the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) network. The establishment will give researchers in Sweden access to advanced computing capacity, skills development opportunities, new avenues for collaboration with industry, and a broad international research network.

“The ambition is to connect Sweden with Europe’s leading expertise in AI across research, talent development, industry and entrepreneurship. At the same time, it will strengthen links within the Swedish AI ecosystem,” says Alexandre Proutiere, Professor in Decision and Control at KTH and one of the leaders of the Swedish ELLIS Unit.

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) brings together outstanding researchers in AI. Becoming part of the network gives Swedish researchers, talents, companies and innovators access to leading AI environments across Europe and will strengthen Sweden’s international presence.

The Swedish Unit is a collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, Linköping University and Chalmers University of Technology. Within the ELLIS network, researchers collaborate across 47 sites throughout Europe.

Impressions from the inauguration

“With the establishment of a Swedish node, we gain a new platform on which to build. It allows us to draw on the valuable experience that researchers have gained through initiatives such as the AI network Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the research centre Digital Futures,” says Danica Kragic, Professor of Robotics and the other leader of the Swedish ELLIS unit.

Research activities at the new Swedish ELLIS Unit will focus on the foundations of AI, AI for scientific discovery, and AI for technology and society.

Through the new unit, Sweden will also gain access to ELLIS’s large and highly competitive pool of doctoral candidates. This could prove to be a decisive factor in attracting outstanding international AI talent.

“The Swedish Unit will contribute a strong industrial and entrepreneurial dimension by strengthening connections between Swedish AI research and companies, start-ups and innovation environments across Europe,” says Danica Kragic.
