Unit Mission
The mission of ELLIS Unit Ireland is to bring together a critical mass of outstanding researchers with interdisciplinary expertise to drive scientific advances and stimulate international scientific collaboration in the field of ML and AI, and to train the next generation of ML and AI researchers.
The Unit will facilitate a coordinated and collaborative approach to research and innovation that tackles the complexities of today’s societal and technological challenges, delivers far-reaching impact and contributes to securing AI sovereignty in Europe.
By uniting researchers, institutions, and stakeholders from across Ireland, the Unit will enable world-class AI and ML research that will empower individuals, strengthen communities, and deliver solutions that drive positive change for Ireland and the world.

Research Agenda
The Unit will advance fundamental research in AI, in particular in core ML and related fields including computer vision, natural language processing and information retrieval. It will foster an interdisciplinary approach by fusing AI, Data Science, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Health research. Furthermore, through transdisciplinary research, the team will work closely with domain experts, policymakers, and societal stakeholders to ensure that AI solutions are contextually relevant to end users and solve real-world societal challenges.
