The overall mission of the unit is to strengthen machine learning research and innovation, increase the presence and visibility within the European research community and make Europe more competitive internationally.

Its research agenda is focused on both machine learning methods and applications such as computer vision, health, earth and climate sciences that link to the corresponding ELLIS fellowship programs. Additional application areas are natural language processing (NLP) and material science.
