Research Agenda
Machine Learning
Our research spans theory, algorithms, and applications, covering online learning, partial feedback, learning in games, unsupervised learning, meta-learning, and statistical learning theory. We contribute to the foundations of machine learning using tools from statistics, probability, optimization, and theoretical computer science. Understanding these foundations is key to improving the reliability and effectiveness of learning algorithms.
Robotics
We develop machine learning algorithms that enable robots to adapt to their environment and solve complex tasks with minimal manual programming. Our work includes online and active learning strategies for autonomous exploration, leveraging multi-modal sensory data (e.g., vision, touch, neuromorphic sensors). Applications include object manipulation, perception, locomotion, and human-robot interaction.
Natural Intelligence
We study how biological brains make decisions by integrating weak sensory and social signals, aiming to bridge natural and artificial intelligence. Our algorithms analyze large-scale neural activity to uncover decision-making mechanisms and social signal processing. This research informs AI development and contributes to understanding brain disorders, with applications in robotic sensory systems.
Machine Learning for Health
Machine learning and medical data enable predictive, personalized, and precision medicine. We design algorithms that integrate prior medical knowledge to improve early diagnosis and treatment. Challenges include privacy, explainability, and handling diverse datasets—from rare diseases to large-scale screenings. We also develop data-driven models to advance understanding of disease mechanisms.
Unit Mission
The overarching goal of the ELLIS unit Genoa is to promote synergies between core machine learning research on theory and algorithms, and specific application areas of science and engineering, particularly robotics, natural intelligence and health informatics. The unit leverages expertise on these topics at the Italian Institute of Technology and the University of Genoa.
