ELISE
This project ended in August 2024.
About
ELISE is part of the EU Horizon 2020 ICT-48 portfolio and originated from ELLIS, a network of artificial intelligence research hubs and associated Fellows. Based on the highest level research, it spread its knowledge and methods in academia, industry and society. The network invited all ways of reasoning, considering all types of data applicable for almost all sectors of science and industry. We do this while being aware of data safety and security, and striving to explainable and trustworthy outcomes. ELISE contributes to the European AI and the ELLIS community on many fronts, e.g. through mobility programs, research program workshops, company collaboration, and policy work.
Partners
Organizing Nodes
The ELISE Organizing Nodes had work package duties, manage networking actions between participants and associate partners, participate in networking actions and in the pan-European PhD program. The participating Organizing Nodes were Aalto University, The University of Tübingen, University of Amsterdam, The Czech Technical University in Prague, Technical University of Denmark, Johannes Kepler University Linz, University of Cambrige, CINI (National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics), Universitat de València, The Max Planck Society, Stichting Katholieke Universiteit, ETH Zurich, The Chancellor Masters & Scholars of The University of Oxford, University College London, Knowledge 4 all foundation, Saidot Oy, OTICON A/S, Fundingbox, Siemens, Zalando SE, Fraunhofer, Spinverse Oy, and EnliteAI.
Associate Partners
Associate Partners participated in in networking actions, participated in PhD program, and received reimbursements for their travel costs by the participant organizing the networking action. They also hosted Fellows.
Mobility Programs
ELISE had a travel fund to stimulate collaboration in the ELISE/ELLIS networks, enabling scientists to work with researchers at other sites in the network. Senior researchers could apply for travel funding as part of the Fellows Mobility Program; PhDs and postdocs in the network could benefit from the travel fund through the PhD and Postdoc Mobility Program.
ELISE’s Strategic Research Agenda (SRA)
ELISE Strategic Research Agenda 2023
The ELISE Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) published in May 2023 set out a roadmap for Europe to build a powerhouse of AI. Machine learning and AI are advancing at pace. Recent progress in Large Language Models signals the increasing power of AI technologies, and the widespread transformation of economics and society that could follow.
To secure strategic advantage in AI, Europe’s research and innovation ecosystem needs a framework for creating AI technologies that are technically sophisticated, safe and effective in deployment, and aligned with societal needs, supported by collaborations that translate technological progress to public benefit.
ELISE’s 2021 Strategic Research Agenda showed how the network was driving the development of new techniques for trustworthy AI; security and privacy; explainability; AI integration into existing systems; and human-centric, responsible AI. The update published in May 2023 goes further in connecting policy and research priorities, setting out the important role that AI could play in delivering the EU’s Innovation Missions and the technological progress needed to ensure progress in AI benefits society. Read more about it in this press release and in this document.
Catalog of AI Centers
ELISE Catalog of Research Nodes 2024
As part of the ELISE project, Spinverse developed a catalog with nearly 100 research nodes for artificial intelligence from all European countries. The aim of the catalog is to help students, scientists, and enterprises to discover the AI opportunities, both locally and in the rest of Europe. The catalog covers research nodes that belong to academia, have dedicated and informative websites, and explicitly have the “AI” term in their names. The new 2024 version includes Industry nodes actively involved in EU projects and all the ELLIS Units! Check out the catalog here.
