2 PhD Researchers in Machine Learning & Medical Image Analysis at Scads AI, Leipzig University

Hiring: 2 PhD Researchers in Machine Learning & Medical Image Analysis
I am recruiting two full-time PhD researchers to join my newly established Structure-Aware Machine Learning Research Group at ScaDS.AI, Leipzig University, Germany.

Our research focuses on developing novel machine learning methods that exploit spatial, temporal, anatomical, and distributional structures to improve generalization, robustness, interpretability, and efficiency, with a particular emphasis on medical image analysis and healthcare AI.

🔬 Your key tasks

  • Developing novel machine learning and deep learning methods for medical image analysis, including segmentation, classification, detection, and disease assessment
  • Investigating structure-aware representation learning by incorporating anatomical, spatial, and temporal information into model design
  • Developing methods for 3D medical imaging (CT/MRI), ultrasound, and medical video analysis
  • Exploring foundation models, multimodal learning, and vision-language models for medical imaging and clinical applications
  • Addressing challenges in domain generalization, distribution shifts, limited annotations, and noisy labels
  • Designing and conducting rigorous experiments on real-world medical imaging datasets
  • Publishing research at leading conferences and journals, such as MICCAI, MIDL, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, IEEE TMI, and Medical Image Analysis
  • Collaborating with machine learning researchers and clinical partners to translate methodological advances into healthcare applications
    💶 What we offer
  • Two full-time (100%) PhD research positions, with expected salary classification TV-L E13 (subject to final HR confirmation)
  • 30 days of paid annual leave under the applicable German public-sector collective agreement
  • Public-sector employment benefits, including supplementary pension provisions
  • Access to powerful shared HPC infrastructure, including 800+ NVIDIA H100/A100 GPUs, subject to allocation and availability
  • An interdisciplinary research environment combining machine learning, computer vision, and medical AI
  • Opportunities to develop independent research ideas, collaborate with clinical researchers, and publish at top-tier international venues
  • The opportunity to help shape a newly established research group
    🎓 Your profile
  • A Master's degree (or expected completion) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Image Computing, or a related field
  • Strong foundations in machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision
  • Proficiency in Python and PyTorch
  • Interest in developing novel machine learning methods, rather than solely applying existing models
  • Good English communication and scientific writing skills
  • Prior experience in medical image analysis, computer vision, or multimodal learning is highly desirable
  • Publications at leading conferences or journals are a plus, but not required
