PhD Candidate in Hybrid Modelling for Ecosystem-Atmosphere Carbon & Water Fluxes
The MPI-BGC, a leading Earth system research institute in Jena, invites applications for a PhD within the GENAI-X project, in collaboration with Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Jena University Hospital, and the Senckenberg Institute. The project focuses on AI generalizability in non-stationary environmental systems, especially hydro-climatic extremes.
The candidate will develop hybrid and data-driven models to capture ecosystem carbon and water fluxes, create robust, interpretable ML models, and integrate diverse Earth observation datasets. Opportunities include interdisciplinary collaboration, publishing results, and contributing to innovative approaches at the interface of AI and environmental science.
Applicants should hold a Master’s in a quantitative or environmental discipline, have programming experience (Python, Julia, MATLAB), and strong communication skills. MPI-BGC offers a stimulating, inclusive, and diverse environment with broad learning opportunities.
