Spotlight on Karolina Pircs

#WomenInELLIS
Meet Karolina Pircs, Senior Researcher, Group Leader at Semmelweis University, HCEMM, HUN-REN SZTAKI-SU 🇭🇺. She’s an ELLIS Member whose research bridges bioinformatics and molecular neuroscience to study human brain aging and neurodegeneration, using patient-derived human neuron models together with machine-learning–based aging clocks.

She says she overcame her biggest challenge of returning to her home country of Hungary after establishing an independent research position in Sweden by bringing with her the international experience, networks, and scientific independence she gained abroad to build and lead interdisciplinary research groups.

Along these lines, she says, “I wanted to take part in this campaign because I am currently the only Hungarian female member of ELLIS, and I believe it is important to give visibility to researchers from less well-funded and underrepresented countries.”
