Spotlight on Anna-Maria Raita

#WomenInELLIS
Say hi to Anna-Maria Raita, Postdoc and Head of Spectral Imaging Laboratory at University of Jyväskylä 🇫🇮. She’s an ELLIS Member whose research focuses on hyperspectral imaging, computational data analysis, and machine learning.

One meaningful career highlight for her has been developing computationally minimalist ML methods—based on the Minimal Learning Machine—for hyperspectral image analysis. These lightweight models run efficiently on edge devices and can be used for tasks such as classification, anomaly detection, and federated learning.

Along with her advice that a career does not need to follow a traditional path to be successful, she says, “After becoming a parent, it’s easy to feel professionally confined—as if you’re stuck at the sandbox. But that is an illusion. Parenthood can be the moment when your motivation to reshape your career becomes strongest, and when you realise that you can step from being someone who simply experiences the changing world to someone who helps shape it for the next generation.”
