Meet the Board: Serge Belongie

Serge Belongie, President of the ELLIS Board, Director of the Danish Pioneer Centre for AI, and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen 🇩🇰, answers rapid-fire questions in our Meet the Board series — a video campaign introducing the people shaping ELLIS and the future of European AI research.

As the new President of the ELLIS Board, Serge Belongie brings both deep expertise in computer vision and machine learning and a collaborative spirit shaped by years of international research leadership. At the University of Copenhagen, his work explores fine-grained analysis of multimodal data, self-supervised learning, 2D/3D generative models, and augmented reality.

In this first episode of our Meet the Board series, Serge takes on a rapid-fire round of AI-themed questions — from “Do we need more data or better algorithms?” to “AGI: 5 years or 50 years?” — and shares his personal take on where machine learning is heading. He also points to what he considers a seminal research paper of particular relevance to the AI research community.
