G-Research Invests in ELLIS PhD Program to Support the Next Generation of European AI Talent

The ELLIS Society announces a new partnership with G-Research, one of Europe’s leading quantitative research and technology firms, to support the ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Program through scholarship funding between 2026 and 2028.

This contribution represents the first private-sector partnership for ELLIS at this scale. It builds on G-Research’s broader commitment to supporting research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and machine learning through its programmes and university partnerships across the UK and Europe.

The funding will support 36 student researchers participating in the ELLIS PhD and Postdoc Program, including fully funded PhD scholarships and support for international research exchanges between leading AI institutions across Europe.

Two distinct groups of students will benefit: First, 24 students undertaking a six-month research visit as part of the ELLIS exchange requirement will receive support covering fees and associated expenses for the duration of their stay. Second, 12 PhD students will receive financial support covering tuition fees and a contribution toward living and other related expenses throughout their three-year doctoral studies.

Eligibility for the scholarships is offered to students affiliated with primary advisors at the ELLIS Sites in Paris, Tübingen, Munich, and Amsterdam.

The ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Program is unique among graduate and post-graduate programs in that it supports excellent young scientists to conduct cutting-edge research in machine learning with joint supervision across borders in Europe. As part of the program, students must spend time with their secondary advisor for a research visit exchange, whether in a different country or at a company.

“G-Research's investment in the next generation of European AI researchers is exactly the kind of private-sector commitment our ecosystem needs to thrive. Supporting students through the practical realities of doctoral research, from tuition to international exchanges, means they can focus entirely on the science. This partnership is a meaningful signal that Europe's AI future is being built, right now, by the people and institutions willing to invest in it,” says ELLIS Board President Serge Belongie (Danish Pioneer Centre for AI, University of Copenhagen).

The funding represents a meaningful financial support available within the ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Program, directly addressing some of the practical challenges students face during their doctoral studies and research visits.

“The G-Research funding allows ELLIS PhD students to focus entirely on their research and build a strong European talent pool, which is exactly what the ELLIS PhD program is designed to enable,” adds ELLIS PhD Program Area Director and Board Member Florence d'Alché-Buc (Télécom Paris).

“Breakthroughs in AI and machine learning happen when exceptional researchers are given the freedom, support and collaborative environment to pursue ambitious ideas,” said Dr Charles Martinez, Academic Relations Manager at G-Research. “ELLIS has built one of the strongest research networks in Europe, bringing together world-class scientists across institutions and countries. By combining ELLIS’s academic leadership with G-Research’s long-term commitment to scientific research, we can help create the conditions for the next generation of advances in machine learning.”
