ELLIS Members Showcase AI Research and Support Europe’s RAISE Initiative at AIS25 in Copenhagen

The two-day event, taking place on 3-4 November 2025 in Copenhagen under the auspices of the Danish EU Presidency, the European Commission, and the University of Copenhagen, is currently bringing together scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the transformative impact of AI on scientific discovery.

Copenhagen, Denmark – 3 November 2025 – The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is being represented at the inaugural AI in Science Summit 2025 (AIS25) with several ELLIS Members serving as speakers and co-organisers of the summit’s workshops.

AIS25 launches the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) initiative, a major European Commission effort to accelerate AI-driven scientific discovery. As a leading European AI network, ELLIS’s presence underscores the organization’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge AI research while supporting Europe’s strategic ambitions in science and innovation.

ELLIS Members Lead Thematic Science Workshops

Several ELLIS Members are serving as scientific workshop organisers and will lead parallel thematic workshops spanning Life Science, Material Science, Planet & Climate, Society & Community, Science for AI, and Policy for AI in Science. These workshops provide a dynamic platform for researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore how AI is transforming scientific discovery - from advancing biomedicine and materials research to addressing climate challenges, societal impacts, and the governance of AI in science.

Europe needs coordinated leadership in AI for the life sciences, therefore infrastructures like EMBL and ELLIS must be recognized as key aggregators and amplifiers of top European AI research. They connect expertise, data, and talent to drive impactful discoveries and ensure Europe leads in responsible AI innovation,” said ELLIS Fellow and ELLIS Board Member Oliver Stegle, Acting Head of AI, EMBL, workshop organiser ‘Life Science’.

Supporting the RAISE Initiative

RAISE is the European Commission’s new virtual institute designed to unify Europe’s AI talent, computational resources, and scientific expertise. Its mission is to remove fragmentation across member states, accelerate access to large-scale AI infrastructure, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and train the next generation of AI-science talent.

With its existing network of researchers, centers, and collaborative programs, ELLIS provides a ready-made infrastructure that RAISE can incorporate, ensuring Europe builds on existing excellence rather than reinventing it.

By integrating ELLIS into the RAISE ecosystem, Europe can build on an existing network where top AI researchers are already connected, ensuring that funding and resources are directed efficiently to the most impactful scientific projects,” added Serge Belongie, Board President of ELLIS, Chair of the AIS25 Steering Committee, Director of the Danish Pioneer Centre for AI, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen.

ELIAS Alliance: Expanding ELLIS to Shape Europe’s Future

The ELIAS Alliance unites leading researchers and entrepreneurs to strengthen European leadership in innovation powered by AI and science. Building on and expanding the work of ELLIS, the Alliance deepens the integration of entrepreneurial value creation into public AI research and education—empowering people with the skills and mindset to translate scientific progress into business models that deliver broad societal benefit and drive sustainable innovation.

Funded by the EU through the European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability (ELIAS), the Alliance connects and amplifies local hotspots of AI and science-based innovation through a pan-European network of entrepreneurial excellence, comprising eight established nodes across six countries, and organised the Science for AI workshop at the summit.

The ELIAS Alliance extends the ELLIS vision from scientific excellence to societal impact. By linking frontier research with real-world innovation, we aim to build a Europe where AI and science empower people, strengthen free and inclusive societies, and create lasting public value,” says Matthias Bethge, Director of the Tübingen AI Center, Co-founder of ELLIS, and Head of the ELIAS Alliance.

On the first day of the Summit, the Alliance presented the inaugural Sciencepreneurship Award to Professor Max Welling (University of Amsterdam), recognizing his pioneering contributions to AI and his leadership in translating research into real-world impact. The award honors researchers who unite scientific excellence with entrepreneurial courage, highlighting role models who turn insight into innovation for society. Welling’s work, including co-founding CuspAI to accelerate materials discovery for climate solutions, exemplifies how curiosity-driven research and responsible innovation can go hand in hand.
