New talent on board: More than 70 young scientists join the ELLIS PhD Program in 2023
The ELLIS PhD Program welcomes a new cohort of outstanding early-career researchers: Following the 2022/2023 call, more than 70 graduates will join the pan-European flagship program this year. They are offered the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge AI research in the ELLIS network, working closely with some of Europe’s leading scientists and labs in this field. Since its inception in 2020, the ELLIS PhD Program has recruited 285 candidates.
Promoting scientific excellence among young AI scientists and attracting the best talent to Europe are key objectives of ELLIS. The ELLIS PhD Program is designed to provide an ideal framework for this: Open to candidates from around the globe, applicants must present an excellent academic track record in a relevant area of study and pass a multi-stage evaluation process in order to be offered a position as an ELLIS PhD student. Once part of the program, the students benefit from joint supervision by two advisors in the ELLIS network, with the secondary advisor being either a scientist at an academic institution in a different country (academic track) or a researcher based at an industry lab (industry track). Each student spends at least six months at the secondary advisor’s lab.
One third of the new students are female candidates
The 2022/2023 central recruitment round has once again seen an increase in interest: The call for applications attracted around 1,900 young scientists from 81 countries (compared to around 1,700 the year before). Following an intensive review and interview process which involved more than 350 machine learning scientists, 76 applicants have now accepted an offer to join ELLIS as a PhD student. Around one third of them are female candidates. 31 different nationalities are represented in this new cohort.
“A warm welcome to the new ELLIS PhD students!”, says Andreas Geiger, Chair of the ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Committee and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Tübingen. “The new cohort represents exactly what we are looking for at ELLIS: highly talented and passionate young scientists from around the world who are committed to shaping the future with modern AI research. We are very glad that they have placed their trust in ELLIS, and we hope to inspire many more young researchers to join our program in the future”, he adds.
About the program
The ELLIS PhD Program is a key pillar of the ELLIS initiative whose goal is to foster and educate the best talent in machine learning and related research areas by pairing outstanding students with leading academic and industrial researchers in Europe. Each PhD student is co-supervised by one ELLIS fellow/scholar or unit faculty and one ELLIS fellow/scholar, unit faculty or member based in different European countries, and conducts an exchange of at least six months with the international advisor during their degree. Nearly 60 European researchers from around 40 institutions have taken on the role as primary advisors of this year’s student cohort.
Research fields ELLIS PhD students have access to range from computer vision, health and robotics to machine learning theory, privacy, natural language processing, climate sciences and more. The program also offers a variety of networking and training activities, including summer schools and workshops.
The ELLIS PhD Program is supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under ELISE Grant Agreement No. 951847
