Several ELLIS Members Take Active Role in the AI Action Summit in Paris

ELLIS Fellows and Members played prominent roles during the Science Days, contributing their expertise and thought leadership to a range of discussions on AI.
Paris is currently hosting the landmark AI Action Summit, a global event dedicated to shaping the future of artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
A key component of the summit was the "AI, Science, and Society: Connections, Collectives, and Collaboration" conference, held February 6th and 7th at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris). This two-day event, colloquially known as the Science Days, served as a crucial prelude to the main AI Summit, bringing together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and thought leaders to explore the transformative impact of AI on science and society.
Several members of ELLIS played prominent roles during the Science Days, contributing their expertise and thought leadership to a range of discussions. The significant contributions of ELLIS members to the Summit directly advance ELLIS's core mission: to solidify Europe's position at the forefront of AI innovation and excellence.
"The Sciences Days of the AI Action Summit come at a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI," said Eric Moulines, Local Chair from École Polytechnique and ELLIS Fellow. "As AI transforms scientific discovery, we must reflect on its long-term impact on knowledge, society, and the planet. More than ever, this is a time to think critically about the future of AI and how we shape it responsibly."
ELLIS members made significant contributions to various symposia and plenaries:
ELLIS President Bernhard Schölkopf had a plenary session on AI applications in the sciences, and properties of causal world models. ELLIS Fellow Yann Le Cun followed with a talk on the differences between LLMs and natural intelligence, and about how to train world models using neural networks.
These talks followed with a fireside chat with Dr. Schölkopf, Dr. Le Cun, ELLIS Fellow Stéphane Mallat and others on the topic of social intelligence, sustainable AI, AI ethics and regulation, and a look ahead.
ELLIS Unit Alicante Director and Board Member Nuria Oliver took part in the "International Report on AI Safety" plenary and roundtable with Yoshua Bengio, highlighting the findings of the report.
ELLIS Fellow and Board Member Florence d’Alché-Buc chaired and ELLIS Fellow Moritz Hardt contributed to the "The Road to Trustworthy AI" symposium, focusing on fairness and privacy in AI systems.
ELLIS Fellow Daniel Cremers and Stéphane Mallat participated in the "Frontiers in Generative AI" symposium, exploring the mathematical foundations and future directions of generative AI technologies.
ELLIS Fellow Francis Bach took part in the "The Mathematics of Machine Learning" symposium, discussing the diverse spectrum of mathematical tools needed for theoretical understanding of machine learning systems.
ELLIS Fellows Iryna Gurevych and Jean Ponce and ELLIS Member Justine Cassell participated in the "AI Impact in Sciences and Humanities" symposium, exploring how AI is transforming various fields across the sciences and humanities.
Several other prominent figures in the AI field with connections to ELLIS participated in the summit, including Stephane Canu and Emmanuel Candes, in addition to Yoshua Bengio. Notably, several ELLIS Fellows were involved in a dinner with French President Macron the evening before the conference, including Francis Bach, Yann LeCun, and Bernhard Schölkopf.

The AI Action Summit and its Science Days provided a vital platform for fostering collaboration and driving progress in the field of AI. The active participation of ELLIS members underscored the importance of scientific expertise in shaping the future of this transformative technology.
