ELLIS members elect a new board for the next two years

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) has a new management board: During the latest general assembly in July, ELLIS members elected five new ELLIS Fellows to the board and confirmed four current board members in their roles. The ELLIS board is the main decision-making body in the pan-European AI network of excellence and defines its strategic agenda for the years to come.

ELLIS members elect the board biannually during a general assembly. Scientific excellence, diversity and the continuity of the board’s activities were key criteria for its composition.

The five researchers newly elected to the ELLIS board are:

Florence d’Alché-Buc, Télécom Paris, FranceNada Lavrač, Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, SloveniaNeil Lawrence, University of Cambridge, UKNicolò Cesa-Bianchi, University of Milan, ItalySerge Belongie, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

The following board members were re-elected: 

Bernhard Schölkopf, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems Tübingen, Germany (current ELLIS President)Nuria Oliver, ELLIS Alicante Foundation, Spain (current ELLIS Vice-President)Josef Sivic,Czech Technical University, Czech Republic (will continue as board member)Sepp Hochreiter, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria (will continue as a board guest)

The ELLIS members also re-elected the current treasurer of the ELLIS Association: 

Daniela Diaconu,Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems Tübingen, Germany 

The following researchers will not be members of the board anymore, but will still support ELLIS in various capacities:Matthias Bethge, University of Tübingen, Germany

Barbara Caputo, Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy

Andreas Geiger, University of Tübingen, Germany

Max Welling, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

We thank them for their service to ELLIS during a crucial period, helping to build it from scratch.

We are happy to have been able to elect a set of outstanding individuals to the new ELLIS board, jointly representing a broad spectrum of European research in machine learning and modern AI.
