Tenure-Track Professor for Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems
2023-11-29 Tübingen
The Tübingen AI Center invites early-career scientists to explore a unique tenure track opportunity at the University of Tübingen in machine learning and intelligent systems.
This position leads to a permanent appointment as full professor (W3) via a simplified appointment procedure, subject to a positive evaluation of the tenure track holder. In that case, the full professorship (W3), which comes with generous, core funding (e.g. for PhDs or postdocs) and substantially reduced teaching responsibilities, need not be re-advertised.
We are seeking early stage PhD graduates who want to join a richly collaborative and prospering research environment with a highly attractive long-term perspective. We also welcome applicants interested in joining the newly established ELLIS Research Institute.
The Tübingen AI Center is dedicated to building learning systems that are safe, robust, and benefit society. Going beyond the limitations of today's learning algorithms, we aspire to push the boundaries in numerous aspects of artificial intelligence including learning, causal reasoning, commonsense understanding, as well as interaction with humans, networks, markets, and society at large. We invite applications in all areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related disciplines, including foundation models, natural language processing, or machine learning in medicine, health, chemistry, biology or other sciences.
The Tübingen AI Center is a joint research hub between the University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, situated in Tübingen's rapidly growing science and technology campus. The center is home to fourteen faculty at the full professor level, and will expand by ten more over the next five years with a commitment to increasing diversity of the team. We maintain close links to ELLIS, a Europe-wide research network in machine learning, as well as to the Cyber Valley initiative that connects researchers with startups and industry in the area.
We seek candidates who pursue compelling research agendas that complement and extend our expertise, and who have achieved international visibility and scientific impact even at an early stage in their career. Applications should explicitly articulate how they extend and complement the existing capability in Tübingen. The advertised position comes with a clear and streamlined tenure track process leading to a full professorship (W3). We offer competitive budgets and compensation packages, with permanent funds allocated for research staff. Candidates may also consider applying to parallel or future calls of the newly established ELLIS Research Institute for potential co-affiliation; in the case of parallel offers, we intend to optimally coordinate them.
Candidates will be evaluated based on their potential for further growth in scientific excellence, considering past scientific contributions as well as the novelty, creativity and uniqueness of their research vision.
Required qualifications comprise an exceptional dissertation in a related field with expertise in machine learning and publications in top-tier journals and conferences as well as pedagogical aptitude.
The University of Tübingen is committed to equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion. Female scientists, in particular, are explicitly invited to apply, as are international candidates. Applications from equally qualified candidates with disabilities will be given preference.
