Postdoctoral Researcher in User-Centered Explainable AI

We are seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to work on an exciting project funded by the European Research Council (ERC). This project aims to advance the understanding and development of AI systems that can effectively and efficiently collaborate with people.


About the Project:

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be an integral part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and Cognitive Science. The ERC-funded project focuses on designing, developing, and evaluating user-centered approaches for explainable AI systems, with a particular focus on explainability of reinforcement learning policies.


Your Responsibilities:

• Conduct innovative research on user-centered explainable AI, leveraging your expertise in AI, HCI, or cognitive science.
• Design and implement experiments to explore user perceptions, preferences, and expectations of AI systems.
• Develop and refine user-centered methodologies for generating explainable AI methods.
• Collaborate closely with the project team and contribute to the development of novel algorithms and frameworks for explainable AI.
• Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals.
• Contribute to the project's dissemination activities, including workshops, seminars, and public engagement initiatives.

Requirements:

• A Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, or a related field. Candidates near completion of their Ph.D. will also be considered.
• Strong background and research experience in one or more of the following areas: AI, machine learning, HCI, cognitive modeling, explainability, or related disciplines.
• Proficiency in Python (or other languages, e.g., R).
• Track record of publishing high-quality research in reputable conferences and journals.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.

About the research group:

The AI and People (APPL) group is part of the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Our group collaborates with researchers from various areas, including behavioral scientists, cognitive scientists, statisticians, etc. The Technion is located in Haifa, Israel, a city with vibrant culture, nice beaches and hiking areas.
