Chair in AI at Inria
2021-10-05 France
Inria, the illustrious French national research institute for digital science and technology, is looking to recruit up to 3 high-level senior or young senior scientists (post-tenure or equivalent at the least, internationally known, influential and productive) in Artificial Intelligence (in the broadest sense). This recruitment is part of the "Choose France" program of the national AI strategy, "AI for Humanity", launched by President Macron in 2018.
Inria is managing the Choose France recruitment on behalf of all French research and higher education institutions, in its role as coordinator of the research component of the national AI strategy.
A condition for applying is that the candidate currently hold a position outside of France. There is no nationality requirement. The candidate can be from the academic or industrial world. As the objective of the program is to strengthen French national resources in artificial intelligence, it is expected that the candidate will settle permanently in France.
The successful candidates will hold a permanent research position at one of the 8 Inria research centers in France. They may join an existing team (see https://www.inria.fr/en/list-of-project-teams for details) or propose the creation of a new team. Researchers at Inria do not have a mandatory teaching service, but may teach if they wish. Since most Inria teams are joint with major French research universities, the candidate may request a part-time faculty position at a partner university. Salary is competitive.
The Choose France chair comes with a 5-year package sufficient to cover the recruitment of several PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and engineers (roughly 1.2M € for 5 years).
The committee will pay particular attention to the following qualities: international visibility and scientific leadership; the ability to open up new avenues of research, or create new disciplines; creativity, originality, and open-mindedness; the ability to lead a team of permanent and non-permanent high-level researchers; the desire to develop a sustainable activity in the French higher education and research landscape; and the ability to interact with economic stakeholders, to stimulate innovation and potentially support the creation of technology start-ups.
To facilitate the chairs’ arrival in France, the Inria human resources department will be available to help settle the candidate and candidate’s family, including in the search for a job for a spouse or partner, enlisting a search firm as needed.
Inria is committed to increasing the diversity among its members. Women and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Inria is an equal opportunity employer.
