ELLIS Unit Jena: Kick-off event

The ELLIS Unit Jena cordially invites to their kick-off event on January 12, 2023, starting at 08:45 CET.
The goal of the recently established ELLIS Unit Jena is to combine fundamental development in machine learning with challenges concerning spatio-temporal environmental and climate dynamics for a better understanding of the Earth system and its components.
The unit organised a rich strategic and scientific program, with high-level representatives from two Thuringian Ministries and the UN, as well as from science including A.M. Turing Award Laureate Prof. Yoshua Bengio, and ELLIS President and Frontiers of Knowledge Award winner Prof. Bernhard Schölkopf.

In the morning, there will be welcome speeches by:
- the President of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Prof. Dr. Walther Rosenthal
- the Thuringian Minister for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation, Anja Siegesmund
- State Secretary for Research, Innovation and Economic Development Dr. Katja Böhler
- General Manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry East Thuringia, Peter Höhne
- Dr. Reinhard Scholl (Unites Nations platform AI4Good at the International Telecommunication Union)
This will be followed by a keynote-talk by Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schölkopf (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems Tübingen) and further invited presentations by Prof. Dr. Jonas Peters (University of Copenhagen), Prof. Dr. Ribana Roscher (Research Center Jülich), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gall (University of Bonn), Dr. Georg Martius (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems) and Prof. Dr. Gustau Camps-Valls (University of Valencia).
The scientific program will be continued with various flashlight talks, followed by a poster session with contributions from the ELLIS Unit Jena, and ends with a capstone talk and discussion of Prof. Dr. Yoshua Bengio (Université de Montréal).

The event will take place in the Rosensäle (Great Lecture Hall) of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Fürstengraben 27, 07743 Jena), Germany, on January 12, 2023.
